Why Good Design Should Happen Before Construction Begins

There’s an understandable temptation when planning a renovation or building a new home to get started as quickly as possible. Plans are drawn. A contractor is hired. Demolition begins. And many of the details of the finished home are left to be figured out along the way. The problem is that seemingly small design decisions are rarely isolated. Move a wall and you may change the furniture layout. Change the furniture layout and suddenly the lighting is in the wrong place. Add built-ins and you may affect electrical locations, trim, flooring or circulation. Decide later that a room needs drapery and you may discover there was never enough space around the windows to accommodate it properly. One decision has a way of affecting another.
